September 24 - Message Update

Dear San Lo Community, an update for the week of September 24, 2017

Thank you Pastor Rod, for the message from 1 John 2:18-27, “TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES.” The town of Hot Springs, NM changed its name to Truth or Consequences to win a contest in the 1950’s. How difficult it must have been to change their name. But even more so, how difficult it would be to try to change truth itself. Our series is on Authentic Faith, and this passage will look at authentic truth. Where is truth in authentic faith

TRUTH DEFIED.  ( VV.18-19)  18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. We see there are those who would defy the truth then and now. John addresses them as, children, expressing his affection for all in this church. We are always curious as to the time the last hour is referring to, but this means “the” whole time between the 1st and 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. It is here John says that antichrist is coming. Antichrist is a person who will come against or in place of Christ. It is a specific individual in the end-time. The book of Daniel refers to him as the coming prince. 2 Thessalonians uses, man of lawlessness, while Revelation calls him, the beast. Even now many antichrists have appeared, not just the one but many antichrists, referring to false teachers who oppose the truth of God in Jesus Christ. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. There is an automatic assumption that everyone in the church is “okay.” That everyone is in the truth, but the greatest danger to the church is from within. Theologian, John Stott said, “There are some who share our earthly company who do not share our heavenly birth.” We have pastors in the world today teaching a prosperity gospel. “Just say it and claim it.” There are some who have single issue faith over politics, race, gender, justice, healthcare, immigration, sexuality, firearms, nationalism, patriotism, and the environment. We should be passionate with these things but some get so caught up with these single issues, they leave in disagreement. Do we divide over or discuss these issues? The problem comes in when people feel there are greater truths than Jesus Christ and let it divide us. They let issues defy the priority of Christ in us.

TRUTH DENIED.  (VV. 20-23)  20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. The next step of the attack on truth goes from defying to denying. You have, is emphatic; you have received the Holy Spirit, your internal teacher. It is not saying, do not follow teachers; but do not follow false teachers. The Holy Spirit enables us to understand and discern revealed truth. We need the objective Word of God and inward call of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not bring new truth, because all revelation is complete. Pre-Gnostic thinking falsely believes that special knowledge makes them feel like they are closer to the truth. Some also put experience above the word of God. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. These are the lies that were being taught: Jesus was a good teacher, a prophet, a good man. Just like Jesus we can all be sons and daughters of God. Jesus died as a martyr but not as Savior. Jesus was human, open to God’s influence. The denial of Jesus Christ also denies the Father who testified of His Son.  No to Jesus is also saying no to the Father.

TRUTH DEFINED.  (VV.24-27) 24 As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. This is where the truth is defined and clearly spelled out. It is all about Jesus, all about Jesus as the truth, the Living Word. Jesus is Messiah, the Christ, as promised throughout the Old Testament. The person and work of Christ is essential. Jesus + nothing = everything; Jesus + something extra = heresy.
It does matter what you believe. The truth of Jesus must be upheld. The Word has a vital part in life. Jesus is the Christ and eternal life comes only through Him.  26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. There are not many ways to God, there is only one way, Jesus. It is the last hour, each of us needs to decide/determine who is Jesus to us. Is He Savior? Is He the Lord of your life? Do you receive His forgiveness? Do you accept His promise of eternal life?  Do you? It’s very clear. For those who call upon His name: we want to start with Jesus, stay with Jesus and end with Jesus

Children’s Message:
Thank you Pastor Eric for sharing about Heroes & Villains. The movies we see often have heroes and villains, but what about in the Bible? 1 John 2:18, “…the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come…” The Bible talks about “antichrists” (villains), who represent those who teach a different or false gospel message. The Bible also has a “hero” (advocate), Jesus, who is always watching out for us. 1 John 2:1, “…we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One…” He will speak on our behalf and died for us and forgives us because He loves us.
