Dear San Lo Community, an update for the week of June 18, 2017…
Thank you Pastor Rod for the message from Exodus 40:9-15, “Tent Intent.” We may have had various experiences with tents, good and bad. Here we have a passage that talks about God’s tent, the Tent of Meeting that is key to understanding the connection we have with Him. From our study in Exodus, we have followed Israel’s deliverance from slavery, His care for them in the wilderness and the hope of being led into the Promised Land. The focus is on worship of God through the tent (or tabernacle) and its furnishings. What was the intent of the tent for God’s people? Recounting each detail of the setting up of the Tabernacle and its furnishings is about the worship of God and meant something more, symbolizing aspects of worship of God. The Tabernacle and later the Temple is the heart of Israelite religious practice. There is meaning in all that was done, it was not just sacrifices, but they were symbols of a higher reality of connection with God.
1) Where God Connected with His People: (v.9) 9 Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings; and it shall be holy. The Tabernacle in all of its preciseness, holiness and purity gave a picture of spotless Eden; a new creation, in us, fulfilled through Jesus Christ . Going to church for the worship of God together in community to support, encourage, pray, help, share and grow is important to connect with God. It puts order into our lives. On the first day, Sunday, of the week, Christ rose, He appeared to His disciples, and was called the Lord’s Day (I Corinthians 16), and the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church (Acts 2). In the Old Testament, people worked, then took Sabbath rest. In the New Testament, Sabbath rest is observed, then work for the rest of the week follows. Consecrate – means to sanctify, set apart for worship and service of the Lord. It is used repeatedly in these few verses. The Tabernacle, altar and priests were consecrated to God. Church is set apart for God’s purpose. We can find solutions to problems, find refuge, worship God, and grow in our relationship with Jesus through the people we find at church.
2) How God Connected with His People: (v.10) 10 You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. Not only (v.9) anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it but the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils. The Altar was made of acacia wood overlaid with bronze, 7.5’ square x 4.5’ tall. Animals were sacrificed alongside as an offering over a screen. This was not done in the Tabernacle but as you entered the outer court. The Courtyard had a line of linen curtains separating the world from the holy presence of God divided in half with altar and basin in the eastern half and the tent in the western half. The first thing they would see is the altar of burnt offering. It was accessible, unavoidable and unmistakable. It was there where sacrifices were made to satisfy the claims of a holy God. There was only one altar, just as there is only one way to God. It is only the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, the perfect, unblemished life, beloved of God and He gave His life for us. There is only one way to God, and that is through Jesus Christ. There is nothing you can add for salvation and you cannot replace Him. Just like the altar, Jesus is accessible, unavoidable and unmistakable.
3) When God Connected with His People: (vv.11-15) 11 You shall anoint the laver and its stand, and consecrate it.The Laver or basin was made of bronze - freewill offering of bronze mirrors from Israelite women. 12 Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. Remember his past error, Aaron had made the golden cow, now Aaron being anointed and consecrated as a priest is a picture of forgiveness. We’ve all done things, but God still wants us. The priests washed their hands and feet as they had to be pure before offering service to God. 13 You shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister as a priest to Me. 14 You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them; 15 and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father, that they may minister as priests to Me; and their anointing will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.” They anointed the Tabernacle and everything in it, the altar, the basin and now the people. Aaron’s priestly line ended, but we have a priest for all eternity, Jesus Christ.
Once again you see Him in the tent, the altar of burnt offering and we see Him in the priests. Jesus Christ is the answer. How do I connect with God? Receive Jesus into your life now.
Welcome and thank you to Makoto and Amy for sharing about their work in Asia. They are grateful for the encouragement and support received from the San Lo community as they have been serving there since 2013. Their focus is to encourage and empower nationals to reach their country with the love of the Father. One way in particular is coming alongside a couple who run a program to reach out to orphans in need of assistance, to let them know they are loved and valued, and uniquely created. Please continue to pray for their connections and relationships, for additional support needed to continue to serve overseas. Makoto is starting a new job teaching English and is in the process of getting the needed Visa and paperwork.
