January 14 - Message Update

Dear SanLo Community, an update for the week of January 14, 2018…

Thank you Pastor Rod for the message from Ephesians 1:15-23, “Measured and Treasured.” We need to look at the measurement of our spiritual lives, by how we grow closer in our understanding of Him. Ephesians was composed as a circular letter which was meant to be passed around. From Ephesians 1:15-23, we ask, “What should be known in our spiritual lives?”

Know then Praise   16 do not cease giving thanks for you… This is more than simple thanks, it is consistent and constant for what God had done in them and is not like thanks for getting something. Imagine Paul chained in prison. How many of us in that situation would be giving thanks to God? He thanks God for two things he saw in the people in Ephesus: They had a Living Faith, 15 having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you… They had believed, received, and obeyed God. They received forgiveness and salvation. A living faith is faith in a living God. We are not a religion of repetitive practices or judged by adherence to strict rules. It is not externally driven but is internal showing external, inside out. They also Lived Out Faith, 15b and your love for all the saints, we are reminded of care for other believers. This was a circular letter meant for several churches to hear. We can’t be lukewarm, apathetic or lethargic with others because a proper relationship with God is to have a proper relationship with one another. If God is so caring, compassionate, just, and sacrificial, should we not also be like that?  Paul knew about these people and praised God for them. He went from thanks to prayer. 16b making mention of you in my prayers; 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. Paul prays for them to grow in the knowledge of God.  Knowledge – not factual or abstract but fullness and depth acquired through personal acquaintance. It is knowing God on an intimate, personal level. The object of this prayer is the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory. Spirit of wisdom and of revelation – this is not some add-on to scripture or special gifting, but the Holy Spirit strengthening us in the knowledge of God as we grow in Him.

Prays then Know  His Pleasure  18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling… unusual and figurative language, talking about inner awareness. When they use heart in the Bible, for the Jewish reader it was the seat of thought and moral judgment as well as feeling. Know - that we have the Hope of His calling – we are called to be His for eternity. A reminder of past action, it has present and future impact. It is hope that springs out of His calling. His Treasure  18c what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints… As the people of God we have His riches, glory, and His inheritance. We have a great and wealthy heritage as the people of God. Israel was promised an inheritance on earth while the Church is promised an inheritance in heaven. We also are an inheritance to God through our worship, our trust, our obedience. These riches, this inheritance is spiritual and imperishable. His Measure  19 what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might…” surpassing – only Paul uses this word in the New Testament, meaning incomparably great, exceeding, immeasurable. Additional words are used on top for emphasis - power toward us who believe…. the working of the strength of His might.  >span class="text">20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead. Literally, from the dead ones. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not an isolated event but the first stage for future resurrection: our resurrection, and resurrection power. Power not to move the two ton stone, remove Caesar’s seal, or the Roman guard, but that power when men had done their worst that power was deployed by God in raising His Son, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. Right hand is not a physical place but it is symbolic of authority. Far above – not in outer space but describing the superiority of Jesus. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church.  Adam was given dominion over creation but he lost it. Jesus was given dominion, head over all things to the church. As the Head, He was given to and for the benefit of the church23 which is His body. It reminds us that the church is an organism not an institution. It lives only in relationship to Christ. Fullness in Jesus Christ is completeness. What more do we need?

Reality check: With the reaction to the ‘incoming missile’ alert in Hawaii, our lives are fragile and the only thing that is consistent and powerful is God. Paul writes this is something that we should know. If we have chosen to follow Jesus Christ our future in heaven is secure and assured.
