SanLo Community, an update for the week of February 18, 2018…
Pastor Rod for the message from Ephesians 4:17-30, >span class="sup">“Walk and Talk.” There are new laws going into effect that prohibit walking across a street while texting (talk). Here is an aspect where we must be able to walk and talk when it is about how we live out our Christian life. Paul wrote while imprisoned in Rome, about AD 60 and Paul spent time in Ephesus as is seen in Acts 18 and shows a fondness for the people. What must we consider to live right in God?
Consider Our Walk. (vv.17-24) 17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind… I say, and affirm - to testify and make a strong declaration, for the people to, walk worthy of their calling. They are instructed to abandon their old way of life. When you live life for the moment, it is futility of their mind – with no hope, aim, worth or meaning, it is a matter of heart. 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous… >span class="text">19b have given themselves over to sensuality… abandoned, turned over, given over, having any shred of conscience, not hearing God. 19c for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness… Where folks have a desire to possess without regard for what’s right or for others. The Roman world was so corrupt – everything was acceptable. There was no appreciation for God, they had no shame. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus… Christ should dominate our minds, our hearts, and our lives. We must live differently than the world. Taught in Him - not about Him as He is truth itself. We imitate and mirror what is around us. We are affected by our friendships, our social circles and the relationships we have. It is essential to have Christian community around us. 22 in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit… A radical change is called to lay aside, or throw off as with trash or filthy clothing, our old self. This is not an external cleansing but of our inner selves. Old self, is referring to our old nature, our old man. When we come to Jesus, death and burial of the old self occurs. We will never be sinless but we are to replace, supplant, and override that old self. 23 that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind… renewed – it is a radical change in outlook, attitude and manner of life. There is a progression of continuous renewal in our lives that takes place. 24 put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. We need to detach from our old self, and attach to our new self. We are new creatures though we are sinners until death, but now are forgiven. Our former manner of life was of futility, corruption, impurity, lusts of deceit. Now we are taught in Christ with the truth in Christ, renewed with righteousness and holiness.
Consider Our Talk (vv.25-30) 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood… lies, but includes things like spreading false rumors, failing to honor our word, exaggeration, embellishing, cheating, false excuses, foolish promises, betraying a confidence. >span class="small-caps">speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Truth - our words should match reality. Neighbor refers to a fellow Christ-follower. The truth is essential for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and yet do not sin… Anger is not prohibited when it is not anger from pride or selfishness. Do not let the sun go down on your anger - Means to keep short accounts, not to hold grudges, resentment, or unforgiveness. 27 do not give the devil an opportunity… by leaving a half-open door to our heart. 28 He who steals must steal no longer… this includes every form of dishonesty whether it may be an issue with your work ethic, or time theft, misuse of leave or on reporting our taxes or even our schoolwork. but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good… Labor – used of manual work and of ministry. …so that he will have something to share with one who has need. Take the focus from ourselves to others, share with others and distribute personally when we serve others. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth… This is about the improper use of words as directed towards others. unwholesome - corrupt, hurtful, rotten – more than swearing. We need to be careful we do not gossip, slander, use profanity, insult, use destructive criticism, blaming, complaining or ridicule. 29b but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear… Does our speech build up the body of Christ? Does it spiritually benefit others? Is it suitable for the situation? Does it instruct, encourage, uplift, or bring blessing? 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption… grieve the Holy Spirit, creates a short circuit in our relation to God and His power. Sealed for the day of redemption – The sacrifice of Jesus calls upon us to be a new person, to have a new life, secure in God, even though we may be discouraged or disheartened.
